Dr. Mary A. Latham was the first female doctor of Spokane. Graduate of Cinncinati Medical and Surgical School in 1884. Married Dr. E.H. Latham and moved to Spokane in 1887, for the healthy climate. She was the Chairwoman for the Washington branch of the Queen Isabelle Medical Association, as well as Secretary of the Humane Society. She headed the Children's Home and establishied the Women's Hospital in Spokane. Dr. Mary Latham and Robert Harvey were early and ardent promoters for the establishment of a library in Spokane. She represented the business organizations during the formation of the Union Library. Dr. Mary Latham died at 72 from pneumonia while caring for a child with pneumonia on January 20,1917 at Sacred Heart Hospital. She is remembered as one of Spokane's best doctors, and one of Spokane's principal founding mothers.
